What Makes Britain Great?

The sun is shining, the weekend starts tomorrow and today feels like a great day.

So what is it that makes Britain great?

The Queen

Surely nothing is more British than the Queen? This year we celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on June 2nd. That’s 60 years that the Queen has been carrying out her duties and promoting us to the rest of the world. Whatever your view of the Royal Family, you can’t deny she’s done a pretty sterling job.

Drinking tea

Tea was discovered over 5000 years ago in China but now it is considered to be a British pass time. According to the UK Tea Council, 165 million cups of tea are drunk in the UK every single day. Wow, we love to drink tea! Whenever something goes wrong, whatever problem you may have, someone is bound to offer you a cuppa, in Britain it cures everything!

Manners

Some people might say that the next generation isn’t as polite as theirs was but on the whole we are a polite bunch. We love to queue in shops and we say things like, “No, after you”. We are known as a nation that doesn’t complain or speak up and one that would rather be polite than say what we really think.

Manufacturing

OK, so there isn’t as much of it as there used to be but we should still be proud of what there is. The most British of cars, the much-loved Mini, is still made in the UK and Britain is home to three of the world’s largest brewing companies – it’s no surprise that we’re a nation of drinkers!

Sense of Humour

We love laughing at other people’s misfortune but even more than that we LOVE sarcasm. Yeah right, of course we do. No other place on earth enjoys being sarcastic as much as we do and we confuse the heck out of Americans who don’t get it and think we’re being genuine.

Fish & Chips

We might be a bit biased but aren’t fish and chips one of the best things about Britain? The crunch of the batter, the delicious soft fish that melts in your mouth and the chips doused in vinegar, all served in newspaper, the way it was intended. What could be more British?

Feel free to let us know what you think makes Britain great.

And to celebrate good old fish and chips, don’t forget you get a free drink – soft or alcoholic – between 2pm and 5pm Monday to Wednesday! Enjoy!
