Two beloved Soho neighbours combine seventy years of chip-shop know-how with sandwich mastery for a limited-edition creation that’s already got the street talking.
Poppies, London’s much-loved chippy with its retro charm and generations of frying expertise, today announced a collaboration with fellow Soho institution Crunch, the sandwich shop renowned for its buttery masterpieces. Together, they’re launching The Poppies Crunch, a fish fillet sandwich built to prove that two of the best things on Old Compton Street are even better together.
The sandwich brings together Poppies’ signature fresh haddock fillet, battered using their trademark recipe, layered onto Crunch’s infamous lightly toasted signature bread with tartare sauce, pickled onions, minted mushy peas, a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of scraps for extra crunch. It’s a proper marriage of chip-shop soul and sandwich-counter precision – crunchy, flaky, and impossible to eat tidily, which is exactly the point.
Poppies and Crunch have always had a lot in common, we both care about our craft, and we’re both pretty obsessive about the details,” said Tony from Poppies. “For us, the fish is the star. We start with fresh haddock, fillet it ourselves and fry it to order in our signature batter. Crunch knows exactly how to take great ingredients and turn them into something iconic that you can’t stop eating, so putting our fish into one of their sandwiches just made sense.
We wanted this to feel like a proper meeting of two Soho favourites, rather than just putting fish and chips in a sandwich and calling it a day,” said Sacha from Crunch. “Poppies have this incredible heritage and a real respect for the craft of traditional fish & chips, while we’re slightly obsessed with what happens between two pieces of bread. The fun was figuring out how those two worlds could work together getting the richness, acidity, crunch and freshness in the right places. After a few very serious rounds of eating sandwiches, we think we’ve got it. It’s messy, indulgent and completely Soho.
The Poppies Crunch sandwich will be available from Poppies Soho (6–8 Old Compton Street), from Monday 14th September for one month, priced £14 without chips and £16 with chips. Available for dine-in or takeaway.
